Ecology & Habitat Restoration

Food Forest

REAP Climate Center is developing a food forest on the South end of our half-mile-long campus. This program supports workforce development, urban greening, and food security initiatives. With our permaculture designs built around specific anchor species, the forest will flourish with a wonderfully controlled chaos as how they would appear in nature.

Our Program

We envision a world where workforce development and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. By integrating these principles into our Food Forest, we hope to inspire a new generation of professionals ready to tackle environmental challenges and foster a harmonious relationship between humanity and nature. To do so, we seek to offer hands-on learning experiences that center on permaculture, horticulture, and sustainable land management.

Food Forests and their Power

A food forest is a growing site designed to produce food efficiently and sustainably through using different heights of a forest—from canopy and understory to ground cover, all the way to the mycelial network of the soil. The construction of a food forest on REAP’s campus will not only provide fresh foods but additional services to our ecosystem. Permaculture guilds produce a myriad of positive benefits including maximizing space, attracting beneficial pollinators, deterring troublesome bugs and animals from the garden, and creating habitats for local creatures

Where We are Now

Our Food Forest is currently in the early development stage. We welcome collaboration, support, and partnership to expand our Food Forest and its mission. To learn more about how to contribute, check out our Get Involved tab and our Partners page.

A major mobilization of community will bring the food forest to fruition aiding further exploration for partnership with educational institutions and aligned organizations. This program is about jobs and resilience.
